New trauma, deep decay, or a damaged filling or crown can cause a new infection to enter a previously root canal treated tooth. In some cases, this may require endodontic retreatment with removal of the old root canal filling for resterilization and treatment. Endodontic retreatment or root canal retreatment tends to be more complicated than the initial treatment, and we generally recommend an initial consultation visit to discuss the procedure. At that time, we will review your treatment options and explain root canal retreatment.
The endodontic retreatment begins by reopening the tooth to gain access to the root canal filling material. We will remove the existing restorative materials and/or post and core, in order to gain access to the root canals. After removing the canal filling, we will once again clean the canals and will also carefully examine the inside of the tooth using a microscope and illumination to look for any additional canals or other problems that require treatment. We will then refill the canals and seal off the tooth.
